Overview
Green Tea Extract (derived from Camellia sinensis leaves) is one of the most clinically studied antioxidant ingredients in skincare. The extract is exceptionally rich in polyphenols — particularly catechins, with EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) being the most potent and well-researched. EGCG is a superstar antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals, reduces UV-induced DNA damage, and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity comparable to some pharmaceutical agents. In Korean skincare, green tea is prized for its ability to simultaneously soothe sensitive skin, control sebum production, and protect against environmental aging. It is a particularly valuable ingredient for acne-prone and oily skin types because it inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which regulates sebum production. Unlike many antioxidants that can be irritating, green tea extract is exceptionally gentle and suitable for daily use on even the most reactive skin.
